Smart Outdoor Staging: An 8×8×6m Lighting Truss System Designed for Real Conditions
The project is an 8 by 8 meter lighting truss system with a height of 6 meters, built using our standard 290mm box trusses. This size is a very popular choice for mid sized outdoor gatherings because it provides enough space for a professional setup without the complexity of a massive concert rig. Our goal was simple: create a lighting truss system that is easy to manage while maintaining reliable performance in an outdoor environment. By focusing on a slope roof design and a robust foundation, we delivered a stage that met every requirement for the open air venue.
Across recent projects, we’ve supplied complete structural setups centered around our Stage Truss Systems and Aluminum Truss, supporting lighting, LED walls, and roof structures with stability and efficiency. These systems are widely applied in concerts, touring events, and large-scale productions, adapting easily to different venue layouts while ensuring reliable performance.
The Structural Reliability of 290mm Box Truss
The choice of truss is the most important decision for any build of this scale. For an 8 meter span, we provided our 290mm box truss because it is the industry workhorse. It offers a great balance of weight and strength that makes it ideal for portable structures.
We built this entire lighting truss system using aluminum 6082-T6 . This specific alloy is chosen because it handles the stress of outdoor environments very well. It is strong enough to keep the 8 meter spans straight and true, while also being light enough to make the assembly process efficient.
The 290mm box truss geometry is designed to resist twisting forces. On a 48 square meter roof, this is essential for keeping the lines of the structure aligned properly. It provides a solid mounting point for both the roof tarp and the lighting equipment.

Architectural Characteristics and the Unique Roof Design
One of the most distinct features of this lighting truss system is the way the roof interacts with the truss pillars. We chose a design that moves away from a fully integrated look to create something more visually interesting and technically clear.
In this specific setup, the roof is not fixed directly to the very top of the pillars. Instead, the roof sits slightly higher than the pillars. This creates a small gap that gives the roof a floating appearance. It is a subtle design choice that makes the entire lighting truss system look less like a standard box.
We focused on keeping the design as simple as possible. By using the inherent lines of the truss to define the space, we provided a stage that looks professional from every angle. The focus remains on the geometry of the aluminum and the functional shape of the slope roof.
Foundation Integrity for the Lighting Truss System
Setting up on grass presents a unique set of challenges because the ground is never perfectly flat or fully solid. GF-Truss solved this by providing a foundation system that is much more substantial than a simple base plate.
We suggested the customer to choose a reinforced iron base for each of the four truss pillars. The weight of the iron helps to anchor the lighting truss system and provides a very stable platform for the truss pillar to sit on. These bases are designed to distribute the downward weight of the 6 meter tall truss structure to prevent it from sinking into the soft soil.
To provide lateral stability, we equipped each truss pillar with outriggers. These outriggers connect from the iron base to a higher point on the pillar trusses. By creating a wide triangle at each corner, we ensured that the lighting truss system remains vertical and resists any swaying caused by wind or the movement of equipment.
These outriggers are equipped with adjustable feet. This allowed our customers to level the entire system with great accuracy. Even if the grass field is slightly sloped, the adjustable feet can be tuned to ensure that the four truss pillars are perfectly upright and the roof grid is square.
Safety Guarantee through Ballast and Equipment Loading
Safety is always the primary concern when we provide equipment for outdoor use. For this 8 by 8 meter project, we included a clear plan for counterweights and load management to keep the lighting truss system secure.
This lighting truss system had utilized water ballast tanks enclosed within a reinforced steel frame, providing both weight and structural protection. The outer metal cage ensures the tank maintains its shape under load and prevents damage during transport and handling. This design allows for stable and evenly distributed counterweight, improving overall safety in outdoor conditions.
Even though it is a mid sized lighting truss system, the 290mm box truss was designed to support a significant amount of equipment. We ensured that there was plenty of capacity for hanging LED screen at the back and audio speakers, lighting fixtures across the front and side beams.

Functional Drainage and Rain Management with the System
The primary reason for choosing a slope roof is to handle the practicalities of rain. In an outdoor setting, drainage management deeply influences an event.
The slanted design of the roof ensures that rain moves immediately toward the rear of the structure. This prevents the pouring rain on the canopy, which is the most common cause of stress for outdoor lighting truss systems. By providing a clear path for drainage, we protect the interior of the stage from drips and moisture.
High Tension PVC Canopy Fitting
A silver PVC canopy that was custom sized for this 8 by 8 meter grid. The canopy is pulled tight over the 290mm box truss system. This is essential for proper drainage during the event.

This 8×8×6m lighting truss system shows how a straightforward design can work reliably in real outdoor conditions. From the truss structure to the foundation and roof, every part is built to handle practical challenges like uneven ground and rain, making the system easy and durable to use.
